Why catalytic converters are targeted and the practical steps that can make access, removal and resale more difficult.
Why converters are targeted
Catalytic converters contain valuable metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium. Police.uk warns that converters can be removed very quickly. Hybrid vehicles are commonly targeted, while high-clearance vehicles can be easier to access underneath.
Make access harder
Where possible use a locked garage or secure compound. Otherwise choose a well-lit, overlooked position and park in a way that restricts access underneath the vehicle. Avoid parking partly on the pavement where that makes underneath access easier.
Protection devices and marking
Police.uk recommends asking a dealer about suitable manufacturer-approved locks or guards and points to tested security products. Converter marking and registration can also make disposal more difficult and help identification if recovered.
Alarms and surveillance
Depending on the vehicle, a suitable tilt-sensor alarm can react to jacking. CCTV or motion-activated cameras can add another deterrent around a regular parking location.
